perturbations to Earth's mantle surface could be amplified and show up on surface of the crust (geology)

Where is the magnetic region seem in the Magnetic Anomaly maps generated?

Genius? I read a few Mark's posts on the topic from 1999 and 2000.
It may have something to do with the Budduist view of the cow in the lush field. Can genius come from the field or the cow's grass consumption/bipoduct?
could it just be that the person saddled with that term is not special in any way other then the sensitivity to their surroundings?
What is genius?
The ability to see a use for ideas or things not meant or invented for a new purpose.

One of the mysteries of lunar volcanism is the unequal distribution of these flood basalts. Nearly a third of the Moon's near side is covered by ancient flood basalts but the Moon's far side, where the crustal rocks are thicker, has much less.
Hmmm I wonder why this is a mystery? Would the gravitation pull of the earth on one side of the moon be stronger, drawing the light molten material toward the earth facing side.

Imagine tossing a handful of very very very small sensors that can fly and communicate into a building fire looking to spot the exact location of the fire and any survivors that need to be rescued.

This is interesting reading too... the comparison of Keysian Economics with the Free market.

"You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away men's initiative and independence.
You cannot help men permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves."

Alas, this Abraham Lincoln "quote" is actually not by him — see [1] and [2] and [3] etc. - ^z

btw, Bob, I had your going-away lunch wrong on my calendar — came to McLean yesterday for an interview and was about to go to Rocco's to meet you there! — but phoned Dr. Amy and she told me it was on 11 Aug, next Thursday — my bad! - ^z

Wow that was fun... never experienced a quake that was bigger then last years little 3-something... 5.9 was 10,000 times smaller then the one in Japan. On to the cat 2 hurricane this weeekend.
– bob 2011-08-24 11:30 UTC
yes, that was quite exciting, wasn't it Bob? — at first I thought it was an off-balance washing machine in the basement, or some activity on the Beltway or the train tracks near here — but it just kept on going! Were you at home at the time? Horrible traffic afterwards!

Mark - I found the converstaion about "Invisible Zebras"
On 7/20/2001 we were talking about natural selection and choice by extrnal forces in making our choices. I brought up Zebras and Lions - Lions select out the less visible from the better visible zebras and kill them. so the zebras with the better stripes survive to breed. The Zebras did not select for the the stripes.
– bob 2011-09-01 14:46 UTC
Aha, tnx Bob! — I'll copy/paste your explanation above and add it as a comment to that conversation page (^_^) ...
– Zimm 2011-09-01 15:28 UTC
As per usual... there are a number of errors in that first description.
The Lions select for the more visible zebras.
– bob 2011-09-01 15:37 UTC
roger, fixed that and created Comments on InvisibleZebras page to record your note above plus a couple of other comments that people (Bo Leuf, and some anonymous person) made many years ago ...

I went to see the Lincoln Cottage 9/21/2011
http://www.lincolncottage.org/visit/index.htm
Very worth the effort to find.
I had not know that during the summer of his term, Lincoln would ride the 3 miles from the cottage to the White House and then back up the hill ... every day.

159 years ago, today ... Linocln annouced the Emancipation Proclamation. I find it interesting that the entire nation faces a need for a similar proclamation to prevent the return to slavery. This time a salvery of ALL the people to a government that is out of control. We must have a return to the rule of law and the constitution.

Thanks for the posting of the retirement train... sorry that I missed the chance to thank you in person. See you at the next whistle stop!

I keep jumping the gun. I came in to work and thought that I only had three days to go... wrong. I have a week. Funny how things compress.
– bob 2011-10-24 11:59 UTC
I know we already had one going-away party for you — maybe we need to have another one! (^_^)

to post a photo, try uploading to Flickr or Picasaweb or whatever and getting a link (I think the link has to end with ".jpg" or some such image file name extension?!) — then put the link in here — for instance, putting http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3060/2974704451_fb83fabb94.jpg
on a line by itself looks like:
that's the best way — or send the image to me and I'll post it for you!

Nice earthquake image of the Washington Monument. Thanks

You have to see the views from my deck in South Dakota.
– Anonymous 2011-11-21 01:30 UTC
I forgot that I also had this method to contact you....
So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about their religion;respect others in their view, and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and its purpose in the service of your people. Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide.
Always give a word or a sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend, even a stranger, when in a lonely place. Show respect to all people and grovel to none.
When you arise in the morning give thanks for the food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies only in yourself. Abuse no one and no thing, for abuse turns the wise ones to fools and robs the spirit of its vision.
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

Mark
I have been setting here, looking at the Hills and thinking about drones.
I wanted to share a thought or two about the need to fight the next war and the rolls that drones will play.
Drones began in the same way that the world war I planes... for use as surveillance, then were armed to drop bombs, then to fight one another... and on and on.
I hope that defense companies and looking at reusing planes that are stored in the desert.
Those aircraft airframes might be able to be refited to carry significant amounts of ordenance and used as remountly piloted guided weapons... a flying MOAB or the Russian FOAB...would be interesting.
– Bob 2013-03-22 14:51 UTC
This must be my day to think about weapons.
Watching the meteorite detonation over Russia would be an interesting weapon.
Combining the speeds of asteroids, directed to a spot on the earth would use no explosives and only the kinetic energy of the object. It would be very effective if a series of objects directed toward the same region over a short period of time. there would be several uses... the obvious destructive power, the psychological effects, the unaccountability and anonymity could be very useful.
The problems of capture of the objects and the attachment of direction control would be interesting to understand and invent. What type of naturally occurring object would make the greatest destruction.
The size of the objects and the composition would determine the use. This type of weapon, accelerated to the speeds needed to penetrate earth or to air-burst would need to be researched.
Can you imagine, a train of objects headed for the buried nuclear facilities in a country, would be very effective and do the trick without radiation from a nuclear weapon attack.

sounds great, Bob! — hmmm — I think the Robert A. Heinlein novel The Moon is a Harsh Mistress had rebels on the lunar colony doing this — pretty scary! — ^z
